A Review of the Efficacy and Safety of Ibuprofen for Pediatric Patients

N. H. Alotaibi.

Abstract
Ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that plays a significant role in the treatment of fever, pain, and inflammation, is an essential component in the field of pediatric medicine. This review comprehensively conducted a thorough review of the literature on the pharmacological profiles of ibuprofen and analyzed its efficacy in comparison with paracetamol and other analgesics in pediatric populations. Studies have demonstrated that ibuprofen is more effective than paracetamol in reducing fever. The antipyretic properties of ibuprofen activate rapidly and persist for a longer period of time. Moreover, the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of ibuprofen provide an advantage over paracetamol for treating conditions involving inflammation, such as musculoskeletal pain and otitis media. Ibuprofen exhibits comparable efficacy to codeine and other NSAIDs in controlling pain and inflammation, while presenting a reduced risk of adverse effects on the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and respiratory system. The remarkable efficacy and safety profile of ibuprofen enable its use for several therapeutic purposes, which reinforce its status as the preferred analgesic and antipyretic in pediatric therapy. The role of this drug in pediatric medicine will be better clarified by future research on its long-term adverse effects and safety for infants under six months.

Key words: Ibuprofen, pediatric, efficacy, adverse drug reactions, safety, pharmacokinetics
